How do we feed the world?

How to feed the world ? from Denis van Waerebeke on Vimeo.

Here is nice presentation with realistic examples/understanding on how it really works. And, more importantly how we can participate/part in it.

Like the quote on people giving food on crisis. "If you give people fish it will feed a day, teach them how to fish they will live life time". So all the developed nations should look to teach developing nation how to better farming.

Eye opening talk on design thinking

Design is about fulfilling human
needs. Industrial age has made us start us with systems and technology.
Importance of design innovation is important.

We need education innovation to have sustainable future - real slum examples

Nice points covered:
We need pull but not push model of education.
Education system remained same since we started in 19th century. This won't and will never fit developing nations (we need millions of teachers to do that).
People who are trying must be recognized and encourage or need some involvement to solve this.

Myth of Usability testing

Robert Hoekman, Jr. | The Myth of Usability Testing
This is really interesting talk on what really happens in the industry.

Design treasures of Amazon by Jarad M. Spool (Preseantation with Audio)

What the hell are they trying to convey in this video (carls junior add)

Add to sell burger :with a girl in Bikini

How should one understand this add?
I do not know proper terms to describe this crap...!

You cant balance yourself even after holding this...

Whats the problem?
This doesn't give you feel of stability when you hold it. You still move even if you hold this.

Where do you find these?
In all Public transport (Buses, Mrt in singapore).

What is the solution?
I found one design in malaysia (I do not have picture though), they have a rod coming down which is stable.  But, there is a chance people might get hurt.

School education needs to change (no should be revolution), to see better future...

Here are two amazing talks by "Sir Ken Robinson". This was his first talk from 2006.

Here is latest talk (march 2010) where he started from where he stopped in his previous talk.

This whole thing can only be possible by making people (each and every one) understand what is going wrong in the way they understand.

Why is it so hard

I think we started to believe that it is the right way education should be. And we are going as far that we start preparing children for college when they are in sixth standard even earlier!

So, I think what Ken Robinson is saying is right ; we need revolution not change (is not enough).

Take a step towards good health by taking stairs

Client place (Health promotion Board).

This is placed in waiting area near lift directing towards stair case.

I took step 3 time in 7 visits to this place and along the straircase we have messages on getting fit..

Hope they could adopt this to office building, shopping complex etc..

You need go to gym to get FIT!

Maths teaching needs make over..

I always used to wonder sitting in maths class, how/where am I going to use this? Ask teachers, No response some times used to get scolding!

I read few books recently like Blink, author follows with story to explain a point. This is very easy to relate. He created context for what he was saying.

Then why cant maths classes be like!

1970 video on how humans understand meaning of life..

Based on this what we our educations systems approach is totally wrong!... We are not providing meaning we just tell them rules and guidelines, when brains do not function that way...

Worspace design that enables collaboration in research and design

This is amazing concept that enables designers and research.. Conventional work spaces are very restrictive...

(Sub way) This should have context and be more prominent than it is now...

Context: they want customers be considerate and clear there trays but very less promoted...

Sign: This sign is not prominent and no context at all..

Solution: They need to come up with more appealing way of prompting customers and expressing thanks to customer..

Do coffee bean needs to pay to add there brand in this list..

Most interesting is Coffee bean in this as they have store just behind  and the branding elements they have signs that are more prominent than this... There umbrellas, main name boards etc...

Amazing the amount of detail that goes into sand scluptures

Amazing how hard they work to show level of details with sand that is very hard to handle...! But, unlucky Singapore had only few.

Good design of toilet signs making it clear...

Below are pictures with signs to toilets at ION orchard, Singapore.

Here are the signs well placed and prominent, directing people to choose..

Once he makes choice and turn to his right there is this sign providing users feedback on what he choose...

This is one of the simple and very effective way of showing signs.. I hope to attach pictures when i see bad pictures...

Amazing video on design simplicity

In this amazing talk George Whitesides takes us through the way how simplicity can occur...

Do not have more than needed, just keep it simple...

Why do we make things so complex when it is not needed...

Do we need so much of material there when it is not needed. And it makes much more hard to use it.

Really bad where tissues are placed!

How should one get tissues?
How can they miss such basic things?

This is in one of the university campus in Singapore.. It seems the contractor has decided place to put tissues even before the construction was over... You can see what people are doing, just pulling out tissues to reach it!.

This reminds me of Intranet projects were people buy technology before knowing what the users are going to do with it. Which i think is one of the reason why many intranets fail.
